Philips C12 - intermittently deaf
I have a C12 phone that seems to go completely deaf and then recovers.
I actually have two of these phones and the other one, even in the same
location, shows a good signal strength so the signal is there.
5 days ago I noticed the 'deaf' phone had lost its connection to o2, so I
tried to re-register and tried turning off and on again all to no effect.
(After entering the PIN code the aerial symbol came up on the display but
there were no signal strength bars showing and registration failed - no BT
Cellnet message - just blank display apart from the clock).
I tried swapping the aerials between the two phones but to no effect.
I had an Italian SIM from Wind that I knew worked in the phone and had
previously tried in the UK when the phone was working and it registered
itself to Vodaphone . This gave the same blank screen as the o2 SIM.
I tried the phone many times (at least 30) over the next 4 days to no avail.
Thinking it could be an intermittent contact fault somewhere in the phone, I
tried cooling it in the fridge and also warming it up in the airing
cupboard. Still no joy!
Deciding that as nothing was working so far, I would call o2, and if they
agreed it was not a SIM or service problem, I would have to open it up to
investigate further. ONE LAST TRY before phoning o2 and SURPRISE, SURPRISE
there were the three signal strength bars after I had entered my PIN number.
It tried to register but the bars started diminishing 3,2,1,0 and failed.
Not to worry - dash upstairs - turn on again and success, it registers. I
notice that the bars start reducing again but find that if I make a call
they immediately revert to full signal strength.
I phoned o2 anyway and apart from saying that he has noticed on his phone
the perking up of the signal strength when he makes a call, agrees that it
seems to be a phone hardware problem and nothing to do with location as my
other phone works OK.
Well, The phone stayed logged in for 8 hours and I made 3 calls with it,
then it went off again and despite many tries it does not get a signal
again.
Anyone out there who knows about the workings of these things and can
suggest what to try.
