Yes -- same RF infrastructure.

T-Mo users are basically roaming on Cingular.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

I would go with Cingular, even if their service plans might be a
little more expensive, because I made many bad experiences with
T-Mobile(including customer care). Many friends of mine that have
T-Mobile also made some bad experiences and many already cancelled
their service before their year was over.
Are you just looking at these two carriers or also into others??? I
also have a Verizon phone and don't have any problems at all...they
are a little more expensive, but they work great for me.
Good luck in choosing your service.

No, as I wrote, they just share the same RF infrastructure. Each carrier has
its own back end.

Thank you for your info. I think if T-M and Cingular are basically same, I
think Cingular has better plan (like roll-over and night min - TMobile just
has weekend min. I am looking at $39.00 plan)

But first I should be able to talk within campus and within dorm (I am
assigned to Unit 1) So is Cingular working fine within Berkeley campus??
Verizon is little expensive for me. poor college student!

T-mobile has 24x7 customer service, unlike Cingular. Cingular has more
roaming agreements with overseas providers than T-mobile (for instance,
I can send text messages to Vodafone in Britain from Cingular and
cannot do so from T-mobile. Customers using T-mobile/One2One in Britain
can't receive text messages from T-mobile USA, but Cingular works fine.

T-Mobile has far more international roaming than Cingular, and at lower
prices. See http://earthroam.com, though I this site refer to voice, not
text.

For coverage and low price, AT&T TDMA is the best choice as it will
provide much better indoor coverage due to 800 Mhz, as well as having
far, far better coverage than Cingular GSM both in the bay area and
nationwide.

As I've explained before, there is relatively little difference in coverage
indoors as a function of frequency -- what matters most are things like cell
siting.

I know John, but look at the post. He's talking about the "$39.00"
with "weekend min" plan, which is not the FamilyTime plan that costs
$69.99/mo.

For $40:

AT&T: 600 Peak, 0 MTM, unlimited night, unlimited weekend

Cingular: 500 Peak, 0 MTM, 5000 night and weekend

Sprint ($35): 300 Peak, 1000 MTM, unlimited night, unlimited
weekend

T-Mobile: 600 Peak, 0 MTM, unlimited night, unlimited
weekend

T-Mobile: 600 Peak, 500 MTM, 0 night, unlimited weekend

Verizon: 400 Peak, 1000 MTM, unlimited night, unlimited
weekend

So with T-Mobile you get 100 more peak minutes than
Cingular for the same price, plus you get the choice of MTM
or unlimited night minutes. So if you can live with the poor
Cingular/T-Mobile coverage then T-Mobile is a better deal.
Also, T-Mobile has more extensive international roaming than
Cingular and at lower per minute rates in Europe.

For the best price/quality trade-off choose AT&T because they
have more international roaming than Cingular or T-Mobile,
albeit at higher prices than T-Mobile. But with AT&T you can
get a GAIT phone which is a _tremendous_ advantage in
California.

Of course only Sprint and Verizon include both MTM and
unlimited nights and weekends so that should also be
a consideration.
