I posted this on this on the AT&T Customer Support forum, but it doesn't
look like I'm going to get an answer, so here goes... THREE QUESTIONS: (1) I have a Siemens S46 phone, and have been sending international text messages to the numbers I use to voice-call i.e. 01144... etc. 01152... etc. I read that Next Generation Phones should use the "+" symbol rather than 011 in front of the number. The phone said "message sent" but will my text messages just disappear into nowhere? I have received no message undeliverable messages. (2) How do I enter the "+" symbol if I have to precede numbers with this? (3) Will I still be able to voice-call an international number beginning with the "+" symbol? |

>I read that Next Generation Phones should use the "+" symbol rather than 011
>in front of the number. Within the GSM specification it says that it will recognize the + as the indication of an international call. The GSM system will then dial the appropriate international access code (here in the US it is 011). So a call to the UK could be entered as +44-<phone number>. If you have it in your dialing directory as +44<number> when you are in the USA, the GSM system will know to diall 011 replacing the +. If you are in Nigeria, it would replace the + with 009 etc.... For those of us who travel the world it is a shortcut built into the GSM system AND it means that we don't have to remember the international access code in every country that we visit. On my phone that I carry with me around the world, I have all the phonebook entries entered in the +<number> format. -- John S. e-mail responses to - john at kiana dot net |

>(2) How do I enter the "+" symbol if I have to precede numbers with this? If you read your owner's manual it probably will tell you how to do it. Most handset manufacturers have something like hold the 0 button til it turns into the + symbol or others have you press the * key twice rapidly. Odds are that if you look in your owner's manual it will tell you how to make the plus character. >(3) Will I still be able to voice-call an international number beginning >with the "+" symbol? Yes. The availability of the "+" symbol is so you won't have to know what the international access code is wherever you are whether it's Europe, Asia, Africa or North America. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To send an email reply send to GSMthemobilestandard (@) yahoo.com |
