You'll typically need a triband GSM phone for it to work in both places
(until someone comes out with a quad-band phone). As GSM networks use a
number of frequencies, you'll need to pick a model that's compatible
for your regions of travel.

Given that you are primarily in the US, you'll probably want to
consider a SonyEricsson T616 (1900, 850, 1800Mhz bands). But if you are
primarily in Europe or elsewhere, a T610 (1900, 900, 1800MHz band)
might be the goer.

Basically, 1900 and 850MHz bands are used in the US. While the rest of
the GSM world uses 900 and 1800MHz bands.
