June 30--Some confusing Smartphone questions are being raised in the wake of
a deal between Microsoft house High Tech Computer (HTC) and Symbian handset
provider Sony Ericsson. The two cell phone manufacturers have hooked up in a
licensing pact under which HTC will gain access to Ericsson's Java-based 3G
cell phone reference design. HTC will use that design to develop 3G wireless
devices. Does this mean HTC, a company Microsoft helped fund and the first
vendor to launch a Microsoft-based Smartphone, is going to add another
platform so that it can enter the 3G market?
