Hi,
I am looking to get Broadband (1Mb, 2Gb) and am considering either PlusNet or Wanadoo . PlusNet appear to have far more favourable write-ups but the initial outlay is high (over £100) Is it worth paying the initial charge and going with PlusNet or would Wanadoo be better? Also is a PCI modem better than a USB modem (and a 1 port router better than both)? Thanks for any help Kind rgds Spencer |

Your statement is 100% correct, in order of preference: 1/ Router 2/ PCI modem 3/ Painfull Death 4/ USB Modem.. If you are quick, there is a PCI ADSL modem here for £10.. I picked one up a few days ago, but have yet to fit it... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=67103542 72 If you do decide on the Plusnet route, I would appreciate it if you could use my referal code: mgillespie Cheers. -- "This dog don't give a feck..." |

PlusNet have a much better long-term reputation for reliability and support. I went with Wanadoo and haven't regretted it so far. It's been consistently 1Mb as advertised. |

It's been consistently 1Mb as : advertised. Plusnet dominates this newsgroup BUT are quite expensive. For all the negative things said about Wanadoo's CS technically they are very good. They are especially good value for light users (with the free activation, modem and 1Mb@17.99). |

I'd look to see whether Wanadoo make it easy to change your service (i.e. move up from 2GB if you decide you need to) - people seem to think Plusnet are good in this area. Also, what they will charge for exceeding the limit (though from what I understand, Wanadoo don't currently enforce capping, but that's only a temporary boon). > PlusNet appear to have far more favourable write-ups but the initial > outlay is high (over £100) > > Is it worth paying the initial charge and going with PlusNet or would > Wanadoo be better? I can't say which is better, but we are currently awaiting our mac key from Wanadoo, so that we can shift to PlusNet. The service with Wanadoo has been largely fine (I've never observed any downtime), but it now seems too expensive (we're on their original 512k uncapped £27.99/month deal), it would cost to shift to any of their other packages and I don't like the look of them anyway. Oh and the CS does seem to be as lame as everyone has suggested, though we've not had much reason to call Wanadoo, until we wanted to leave. The last time we called them, it was the early days of Freeserve and their premium helpline was useless in trying figure out why the script on their install disc just dumped a bunch of files on our PC and failed to configure the browser or launch the signup routine ("oh, it shouldn't have done that sir" was about all they could offer). > Also is a PCI modem better than a USB modem (and a 1 port router > better than both)? I'd always go for external modems, even if they are USB. That said, I use a router. ;-) Dave. |
