Default Use modem / router as a modem?

I've got an Asus WL-500g wireless router that I've been using as a WAP.
I recently bought a SpeedTouch 530 modem / router with the aim upgrade
to a more expensive model with a built-in SPI firewall.

Is there any reason why I can't use the SpeedTouch as just a modem, and
plug it into the Asus, which I now realise has an SPI firewall after a
firmware update.

Your easiest and best option is to configure the ST530 for rfc1483
bridging using the world wide template

http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/download...ates_v4279.zip

and then set the Asus for PPPoE mode.
