I recently was 'given' one of these by Orange as a 'free'
upgrade. Seemed like a good idea at the time. However, GPRS always failed on the phone. Orange Customer Cervice told me that I in order to get GPRS on a Blackberry I needed to pay an additional £5 (I think) on my monthly contract, and that the shop should have told me this when giving me the phone. (They did not.) As I get GPRS on other phones (incl. a Nokia 9300i) purely on an as used basis, I was not interested in paying Orange an extra £5 on top of the £12 a month I pay them anyway. Does anyone have any experience of unlocking a Blackberry 7130g and / or getting GPRS and e-mail to work without paying the extra monthly charge, just paying for what I use as I go? Thanks for any advice. -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Holiday specialists for Germany, Alsace, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic |

OK. But I had no interest in connecting to BlackBerry's servers, just the ones I normally connect to. Or is the hardware designed only to work with BlackBerry's servers? Meaning that if I want to read e-mail on a Blackberry then that e-mail needs to be diverted from its usual POP3 server to a Balckberry server? I assumed that like on a Nokia 9300i I would be able to set up what ever servers I wanted. Seems to me that without that basic ability I could not get it to work the way I would want anyway. Which means that it is only any use to me as a phone anyway (sort of fancy Nokia 1100). -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Holiday specialists for Germany, Alsace, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic |

There is no email "client" other than the BlackBerry system. You would configure their system to collect your pop email & send it to the phone. > > Meaning that if I want to read e-mail on a Blackberry then > that e-mail needs to be diverted from its usual POP3 server > to a Balckberry server? Your only option would be to use webmail...unless there's a third-party mail client for the bb. > > Which means that it is only any use to me as a phone anyway > (sort of fancy Nokia 1100). I can think of better phones than a blackberry. (I have the 8800) |

Seems like it was not the cleverest choice, but it did not actually cost me anything! -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Holiday specialists for Germany, Alsace, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic |

True, but of no significance, since I have no intention of ending the service anyway. -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Holiday specialists for Germany, Alsace, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic |

Can you come to my shop for your next upgrade? I'll see what I've got in the stockroom that I need to get rid of! -- Regards Jon |

As long as you are somewhere convenient, and you have something that does GPRS e-mail with at least a half-decent QWERTY keyboard as well as voice lying around in your stockroom I would be happy to. Fax would be useful too. I know that Orange will not be offering anything like that on a contract that pays them £11 a month. Otherwise I shall stick to seeing what I can screw out of a local Orange shop, who at least always seem to have much better stuff at their disposal than the Orange website. Thanks for the info about Blackberries. I shall not be bothering with another, even if it, too, is 'free'. -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Holiday specialists for Germany, Alsace, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic |
