The thirty days ( I should have said 60 days) apply if your account
is empty or you report your phone lost or destroyed. Virgin Mobile
has such a meager choice of models, it is not worth buying another
new one otherwise except to replace a lost or damaged phone. The
ninety days apply to the date that the time added to the phone will
expire. If you switch phones, the time on the old phone is lost
unless you have Central Intelligence transfer the amount within
thirty days after losing the old phone.

On the original poster's question, here is an excerpt from the
Virgin Mobile FAQs:

Q. If I buy a new Virgin Mobile cell phone, can I keep my
phone number and account balance?

A. Yes, you can keep the same phone number and your account
balance fully transfers to your new phone. Call Central Intelligence
at 1-888-322-1122 and they'll help you complete the transfer.

As an added bonus, if you pass your old cell phone onto
someone else, you could each qualify for a $5 "Pass It On" airtime
bonus. Find out complete details when you call to activate your new
phone.
